A History of Street Outreach
by Donna McCauley

On September 25, 2001 a few friends and I gathered for what turned out to be one night of many. What an awesome night we had! We met ten women, and handed out sandwiches, juice and hygiene kits. When we asked if we could pray with them, some were so excited that they grabbed our hands and gave a resounding, “Yes!” The Lord was definitely with us, leading and preparing the way for us to reach out to these women. The Lord has continued to grow and change us and those we love on a weekly basis! When we started, we made contact with only women, and then a few men approached us. We explained to the men that we were caring for the women working the streets. The men were very courteous, and some even said, “God bless you, and thank you for taking care of our sisters”. In the following months we started developing relationships with the men and the children that live in the neighborhood.

This simple act to love God and love others has grown in ways that are truly humbling. The relationships we have been able to develop and the trust we now share with so many is too precious for words. We know there are a lot more people to meet and specific things to pray about, for example, jobs, education, safe homes and neighborhoods for the kids. Over the years we have been instrumental in helping to connect neighbors with each other who can share resources such as cars, phones, and trips to clothing and food pantries. During the summer months we have neighborhood clean-ups and barbeques. In the past few years we have developed wonderful relationships with Drug-Treatment centers and have had the joy of seeing many of the clients we meet on the street enter treatment and begin the process of rebuilding their lives. Through the relationships we’ve developed with various other community groups we now work together in placing clients in jobs, transitional housing, jail visits, hospital visits, trips to grocery stores for those who do not have transportation, getting their children in tutoring programs and just doing life with them; and enjoying every minute.

We have now been hitting the streets of Detroit, branching out into other neighborhoods, for over 7 years. We are so grateful for the relationships we have developed, for the blessing of changed lives and for the opportunity to love others. The ministry has grown from doing outreach 1 evening a week to going out 3 evenings a week, into 3 different neighborhoods.

If you would like to help us help others, either by donating gas gift-cards, grocery gift-cards, travel-sized hygiene items, juice boxes or being a monthly supporter, please let us know. Each week we send out email updates on how the Lord is transforming lives. If you would like to be added to our weekly email list please contact us at:

70x7 operates under the umbrella of Abide Ministries, a tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization
This ministry is not possible without the generous gifts of people like you. The money you donate goes directly to helping change lives. We do not receive government funds and we are not supported by any church. All financial donations are 100% tax deductible.

Why 70x7 serves:

Jesus said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.
Mark 16:15

The 70x7 ministry serves the community because we were blessed with a desire to share the love and joy we’ve found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. There are many people that don’t know, haven’t heard or don’t feel they are worthy of the love offered to them by their savior. I knew what it was like to live a life feeling used and abused, not knowing or understanding that someone desired a better life for me. By accepting the love and forgiveness offered to me by Jesus Christ, I have been able to let go of the pain of the past. This ministry was started by the prompting of the Holy Spirit to go out into the streets and share that love and forgiveness with others.

And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" Romans 10:15

How 70x7 serves:

Abide Ministries/70x7 was started in 2001 for the benefit of women, men and single parents engaged in at-risk activities, living below the poverty level, which are homeless or at risk for becoming homeless. Many women (and men) are engaged in at-risk activities and become trapped in the lie that there is no way out, that no one cares for them, that society and/or their families have neglected them. It is our goal to become someone that they can trust, talk to; seek referrals for shelter, treatment, health care, education and various other resources. It is our fervent prayer to build a relationship with this population to impart the knowledge that we will love them, (We love because he first loved us. John 4:19) and pray for them, without bias. 70x7 goes out onto the streets of Detroit on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Using a van as our mobile base, we hand out lunch bags, hygiene kits and prayer.

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
